A simple cataract surgery and a pair of spectalces can eliminate blindness. Yet due to non availablity of affordable and accessible care, many choose to remain blind and put their family into poverty. This situaion is common in few Indian states like Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and few others.
Riti eye care hospital is a social enterprise that has adopted Affordable Eye Care Model (AECM) from the successful Aravind. AECM provides much needed solution to solve eye health problem in an inclusive and sustainable manner. It adopts a cross subsidisation model where high and middle income group can choose to pay the market price and low income group is offered free/subisdised srugery.
Community outreach camps are backbone for affordable eye care model. It eanbales Riti to extend its services beyond base hospital and able to serve many who otherwise would have delayed or avoided eye check up. Patients with minor problems are treated on the spot, with more complicated cases or those needing surgery referred to the eye surgery center. Patients undergoing surgery through eye camp are normally poor/low income group. Through the support received from community donors Riti offers surgery free of cost. Being a sociallly committed business, Riti has set a mandate to perform atleast 40% of surgery free.
